Search Washington DC Hotels Established in 1791, Washington, D.C. is not known for fashion or a hip arts scene, but for politics. Named after President George Washington, the first President of the United States, the land was chosen by him for it's close proximity to his property in Northern Virginia. In order to avoid any disputes as to what city should be the New Nations capital, Washington D.C was carved out of Maryland and Virginia excluding it from any state. Delegating limited local rule to the municipal government, the U.S. Congress has ultimate authority over the city.

Interesting Note:
Room 776, The Mayflower, Washington, D.C. - Franklin Roosevelt stayed here in the months leading up to his 1933 presidential inauguration. The hotel is also more recently known as the site of Client 9's (aka former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer) secret meetings.

Originally Pierre L'Enfant, an architect who had served in General Washington's staff, was commissioned to design the city; however, due to his temperament he was dismissed from the project before it's completion. Refusing a position at West Point, he spent the remainder of his life trying to get Congress to pay him what he thought he was owed. He died in absolute poverty buried at a friend's farm. In 1901, using L'Enfant's original design, the McMillan Commission laid out plans for a sweeping National Mall. Finally recognizing his genius and forethought, he was moved to Arlington National Cemetery on a hill overlooking the city that he designed.

The Washington Monument opened in 1888 after four decades of construction, however, the Lincoln Memorial and other monuments on the National Mall did not begin until the early 20th century. In 1968 riots sparked by the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., lasted for four days. Most of downtown D.C. was burned. It was at this time that President Lyndon Johnson ordered in over 13,000 troops to occupy the city. This was the largest occupation of an American City since the Civil War. Taking decades to recover, there are still vacant lots left as a reminder of the violence. In 1976, the country's bicentennial triggered investment back into the capital. One of the most critical developments in bringing people back into downtown was the development of the subway system, the Washington Metro subway, which opened for operation in March of 1976. With relatively few residents having lived in D.C. all of their lives, the city is a very "young" city. The largest percentage of the population (550,521) is under the age of 30.
