Honolulu, meaning "protected bay", is the capital of Hawaii, as well as the financial and commercial center of Hawaii. There are a number of different neighborhoods and districts in Honolulu that offer cultural attractions, shops, and a mix of architectural styles from modern to historic. The most notable areas are Pearl Harbor, the downtown area, and Waikiki.
Waikiki is a world famous beach resort with a large choice of hotels that line the series of beaches or along Kalakaua Avenue or the many side streets. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, also known as the Pink Palace, is located on Kalakaua Avenue. It is an iconic hotel known around the world for its beautiful setting and luxurious accommodations. The beaches are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, relaxing and a variety of water sports. The first hotel built was in 1901, the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort Waikiki Beach Hotel. Once Hawaii became more accessible from the mainland - the need for more hotels in Honolulu grew substantially. The Moana Surfride is an historic luxury resort featuring rooms in the Banyan Wing with antique furnishings. Hotels in Honolulu range from budget-priced to luxury resorts including Halekulani, a private luxury estate offering renowned fine dining and impeccable hospitality.
Downtown Honolulu has both modern and historic buildings, including many that were declared National Historic Places. Aloha Tower, once the tallest building in Hawaii, is in the center of the Marketplace, and welcomes incoming ships to the port. It also serves as a clock tower and offers magnificent views of the harbor. Luxury hotels near Aloha Tower include Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki and the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Hotels in Honolulu's Downtown core provide accommodation for cruise ship travelers, beachfront views, and easy access to major routes such as Freeway One. Another important tourist destination is Pearl Harbor, surrounded by a US Naval Base and best known for the Japanese attack in 1941. It is known as one of the best harbors in the Pacific. One of the main attractions in Pearl Harbor is the USS Arizona Memorial, erected above the sunken battleship. The memorial is a white, floating building containing a shrine with the victim's names.
There are several gardens and museums in Honolulu including Foster Botanical Garden, which became a public garden in 1930 and features a prehistoric section as well as world-renowned orchids and tropical plants. Lyon Arboretum, a 194-acre rainforest, is home to 5,000 tropical plants and a collection of palms. The Walker Estate is home to a Japanese garden, considered the oldest in Honolulu. The Bishop Museum and Planetarium is Hawaii's state museum with a remarkable collection of Polynesian arts and artifacts as well as a natural history exhibits. Completed in 1889, the museum building is a notable feature with the original wooden staircase and display cases.
Diamond Head, located near Waikiki Beach, attracts thousands of tourists each year who enjoy abundant recreation opportunities and the scenic volcanic slopes. There are a number of hotels to choose from, such as W Honolulu Diamond Head Hotel, offering spectacular views, as well as walking distance to shopping, restaurants and attractions. The Kahala Hotel and Resort is a prominent destination for visiting dignitaries and other famous people. The hotel offers daily performances by the dolphins who live in the pools on the landscaped grounds of the resort.
The climate in Honolulu is warm and sunny for most of the year, with little rainfall during the summer months. Rain generally falls from October to March. This is a key factor in the tourist trade, most travelers come to Honolulu for the sunshine, beaches, scenery, and laid back lifestyle.
