A relatively small city, San Francisco, takes up only 46.5 square miles and is home to 800,000 residents. The "city by the bay" saw a huge population and economic explosion in the mid 1850's as "Gold rush fever" hit. However, in April of 1906, the greatest
earthquake in California history (measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale) struck. The earthquake itself wasn't really the problem, but the fires burning out of control afterward were. By the time they burned out more than half of the city lay in ruins. Suffering through the Great Depression, San Franciscan's moved on.
Interesting Note: Room 203, Mark Twain Hotel, San Francisco, California - On January 22, 1949, federal narcotics agents raided jazz singer Billie Holiday's room and she was arrested for possession of opium. The case went to trial but she was acquitted.
The construction of the Bay Bridge in 1936 and the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937 are testaments to this fact. World War II saw the Bay area as a perfect location for military operations in the Pacific, booming with shipyards throughout.
