Perhaps the greatest boost to Orlando's economic success was in 1965 when Walt Disney announced plans for Walt Disney World. Miami and Tampa had been discussed as possible locations, but with the great threat of hurricanes in those areas, Orlando was chosen. With Walt Disney World opening in October of 1971, the city saw a population and economic explosion. Another factor in this explosion was in 1970 when the Orlando International Airport was created from a bit of the McCoy Air Force Base. In addition to the Air Force Base the city also had a Naval presence. The Orlando Naval Training Center was opened in 1968 and provided training to recruits in conjunction with being a base for selected post basic training programs. This base along with McCoy Air Force Base has since been closed and the area has been developed into tract housing in a development called Baldwin Park.
