With a population of just over 300, Miami was officially incorporated as a city in July of 1896. Over the next 20 years Miami's growth exploded to over 29,000 due in part to the role it played in World War II. Cubans emigrated to Miami. Also fueling this population explosion was the fact that gambling was legal and prohibition was never truly enforced, leading alot of northerners to the area. Today Miami is home to over 379,00 people.
