Search Los Angeles Hotels Newspaper editor Horace Greeley's advice to "Go West Young Man" was taken very seriously by easterners in the late 1800's to early 1900's. Despite the fact that the fresh water supply was painfully inadequate by 1900 Los Angeles' population had grown to 100,000 and by 1930 it was two million. This demand for water lead to the design of the longest aqueduct in the world. By November 1913, Owens River water, located in the Owens Valley (230 miles Northeast of LA) was barrelling into the San Fernando Valley at the rate of 26 million gallons of water a day. The daily flow today is 525 million gallons! This population surge had much to do with the discovery of oil in Los Angeles. By 1923 LA was producing one quarter of the world's total supply and is still a major contributor today. Donald Douglas and the Lockheed brothers, during WWI, started aerospace plants in the area. With the aviation industry now booming, the real estate market went crazy and brought Los Angeles out of the depression.

Due to war production and migration Los Angeles was becoming a financial and industrial powerhouse. Not only assembling more cars than any city outside of Detroit, more tires than any outside Akron and more furniture than Grand Rapids, it was the national capital of motion picture production, radio programs and soon to be television shows. However, over the last 50 years, Los Angeles has lost most of the industry that was developed during this time. Many studios still call LA home, such as CBS, 21st Century Fox, NBC - Universal and Disney Studios in Burbank.

Until the 1950's Rodeo Drive was a horse path, not becoming the shopping Mecca that it is today until the 1970's. Frank Lloyd Wright even designed one of the shopping courts, Anderton. One of Southern California's most visited and recognizable landmarks is Grauman's Chinese Theater. Having already gone through a name change, only to return to the original, it is home to the famous autographed cement blocks. Opened on July 17, 1955, Disneyland is one of the most memorable places in the world. Located in Anaheim (28 miles from LA) it has been visited by more than 515 million tourists! In 1951, after an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, Sir Hugh Beaver, managing director of Guinness Brewery, realized that there was no such reference book in which to obtain answers to just these kinds of questions. Hence, the Guinness Book of World Records was born. Holding a record itself for the best selling copyrighted book series, you can visit one of it's many museums in Los Angeles.

Officially opened in 1922, the Hollywood Bowl, a modern amphitheater was constructed from a natural amphitheater named Daisy Dell. The Los Angeles Philharmonic has called it home since the beginning. Entertainers from Judy Garland and Cher to Pink Floyd and Monty Python have graced it's stage. Located in Hancock Park, the LaBrea Tar Pits are known for their huge number of mammal fossils dating back to the last ice age. Early settlers using the pits as a resource for asphalt mistook the bones as belonging to some unfortunate local cattle. Little did they know that some of the relics dated back over 38,000 years!
