Contrary to popular belief, Las Vegas was a city before Bugsy Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel in 1946. Encompassing a little more than 19 miles, Las Vegas, was incorporated in 1911 and was called home by 800 residents. The start of construction on
the Hoover Dam in 1931 was responsible for the population exploding to over 5,000. By the time it was completed in 1935 that number had swelled to well over 8,000. During World War II the defense industry saw the isolated location, plenty of water and inexpensive energy as perfect for military industries. Along with the Hoover Dam construction in '31, gambling was
legalized. Before long a Gaming Board was created, the first racially integrated hotel (Moulin Rouge) in Nevada was opened and topless Showgirls debuted in "Minsky's Follies". In the 60's a phenomenon lead by none other than Howard Hughes starts gambling on it's way to a legitimate business. Having the necessary capital to buy and/or build hotel and casino properties,
large Corporations can't pass up the profitability that's promised. By the mid-70's some of these properties actually had stocks traded on the market.
