Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo - Over 70 Years of Western Fun! By Kim Checolo

The beginning of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is something that is anticipated all year long. For nearly one entire month during late February and early March Texans, and livestock fans from around the world, gather on the property of the Reliant Complex and have the time of their lives.
What started in 1931 as a livestock exposition has grown into one of the United States greatest festivals, and the rodeo has been deemed as the worlds largest. Over 16,000 volunteers work hard to entertain the millions of visitors that come each year. The Show begins with a parade, trail rides and
a sumptuous bar-be-que cook-off. From that point on it’s no holds barred and the fun is nonstop! During the first several weeks the Livestock Show brings over 33,000 professional breeders and livestock exhibitors. Horses, cows, sheep and even rabbits are judged, and prizes, ribbons and trophies are
awarded. During the later portion of the Livestock Show the junior members show off their talents at raising animals. Local clubs and organizations help kids to learn skills, and all livestock must be personally raised and groomed by each child, age 8-19 years old. Award winning livestock can be sold for top dollar at an auction afterwards.

For more than 1 million spectators each year, the Rodeo is what is highly anticipated. Only the top rodeo riders in the business are selected to participate in the bull riding, steer wrestling, bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, team roping, and barrel racing competitions.
Not only is it an honor to be invited to compete in the rodeo, but participants can win monetary prizes for high scores. Also held during the event is a horse show featuring both English and Western riders from all over the world. Breeds are shown separately and coveted prizes and cash can be won.
After the shows each night is when the stars come out…literally! Concerts and shows by today’s top celebrities are scheduled each evening, and the surprises just keep getting better and better each year! Over the years great performers like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Selena have graced the stage
during the duration of the Show. Today top names like Tim McGraw, Bon Jovi, Garth Brooks, Beyoncé, and Kenny Chesney play to packed houses each night. From singers, to comedians to actors; everyone can find someone to enjoy!
A huge part of the appeal for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the carnival rides, the fabulous food and the shopping opportunities. Over 60 rides hurtle, drop, race, and spin thrill seekers, and a separate kiddie-ride area is provided for the younger visitors. Kids will also love the petting
zoo, pony rides, mechanical bull, and pig races. Shoppers will love the chance to have their favorite items all in one place. Everything from clothing, to leather goods, to jewelry is available for those looking for that perfect bargain. Bring your discerning taste and your appetite because the
Livestock Show and Rodeo is here to tempt you. Wine and bar-be-cue competitions take place during the weeks at the Show, and food vendors from all over come to feed the masses too.
