In 1871, what started as a small fire in a stable, destroyed the entire inner city of Chicago. Over 18,000 buildings were burned and 100,000 of the 300,000 people that called it home were left without. However, Chicago viewed this as an opportunity
to build a better city. Between 1870 and 1900, Chicago became the fastest growing city in human history. The 1920's brought international notoriety and fame to the city by way of gangsters. Al Capone, probably the most popular, spent his time warring against the law during this time of Prohibition. Although being a violent time, this era also lent itself to a large
increase in industry as the Great Migration began. In December of 1942, the World's first controlled nuclear reaction was held as part of the top secret Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago.
