Scientist in 1879. As a literary center Boston was premiere. Hawthorne, Longfellow, Emerson, Holmes, Lowell and Prescott (to name a few) called it home. Boston was home to the first vaudeville theater in 1883. In September of 1897 the first underground subway opened, the Tremont Street Subway.
