    Healdsburg Plaza:
Sitting at the foot of Fitch Mountain, Healdsburg was first settled by forty-niner Harmon Heald. The focus of this beautiful quaint town is the Healdsburg Plaza, it is surrounded by world class restaurants, art galleries, antique shops, book stores, clothing stores, café, bakery and deli. This is an ideal place to spend the day or an afternoon combined with wine tasting. Unique shops surround the plaza, with plenty of lawn space and benches for picnicking or for you to simply relax. If you come on Sunday afternoon you'll be in for a treat, for there are musical concerts, art shows and fiestas. Surrounding the plaza are many winery-tasting rooms. These are directions to a few: On Center Street is the Windsor Vineyard tasting room, where you can taste limited edition wines not available to shops or supermarkets. On Hayden Street is the White Oak Vineyard tasting room. And off Healdsburg Avenue is Kendell Jackson Winery, delightful food sampling and special wine tasting.

    Alexander Valley:
The town of Healdsburg is nestled between the Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys. Alexander Valley is a lush valley of about 10,000 acres with most of the wineries along Highway 128. This valley is comparable to the Bordeaux region of France, and produces about one-third of the county's grapes. A variety of grapes do well here, but it is best known for Cabernet and Chardonnay. Many of the wineries have picnic facilities so don't miss Jimtown Grocery for your picnic supplies and local produce. For a special treat, Sommer Vineyards has Saturday afternoon concerts during the summer season, call for times. At the eastern end of the Alexander Valley is the little known Knights Valley, which leads into the Napa Valley.

    Dry Creek Valley:
This valley stretches west along the Dry Creek, 16 miles long and 2 miles wide, and is best known for its Zinfandels. This grape was originally planted in the 1860's, and has brought the Dry Creek Valley world recognition as a premier wine-growing region not only for its Zinfandels, but Cabernets, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlots, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. There are some exciting new and rediscovered traditional grapes emerging from the Dry Creek Valley such as Syrah, Cinsault, Viognier, San Giovese and Barbera. * For additional information and a great map, ask for the Russian River Wine Road Map.

    Lake Sonoma:
Don't forget Lake Sonoma and the Warm Springs Dam at the west end of the Dry Creek Valley. The dam is a spectacular structure completed in 1983. Opened all year is the Fish Hatchery and Visitor Center, staffed with a ranger for any questions you might have on the special exhibits and audiovisual programs. The marina with boat rentals and picnic area should not be missed.

    Guerneville/Armstrong Redwoods, Wineries:
Heading a little south and west you enter the Russian River wine-growing region best known for its sparkling wines, the home of World famous Korbel. Moving west along River Road you come to the second stop sign in Guerneville. Turn right on Armstrong Woods Road to go to the Redwoods. There is a small entrance fee to drive into the park, but we recommend parking in the lot and walking. You really need to stand beside the 350-foot trees, the oldest of which is 1,400 years old. Picnic tables are available in the woods and horseback riding and camping are available at Austin Creek State Recreation Area above the park. After leaving the park, you might want to stop at The Burl Shop outside the park for just the right Redwood gift. Duncans Mills, an old logging town, is now a village with a population of about 100 people. A great place to pick up picnic supplies from the deli and visit the gift stores. This is about 8 miles from Guerneville.

    Jenner:
Sonoma coast: A small fishing village at the mouth of the Russian River. A colony of harbor seals are often seen sunning at the mouth of the river. Directions are to take Highway 116 to the ocean's edge, about 4 ½ miles. Then you may choose to continue up Highway 1 to Fort Ross, about 12 miles over windy roads, or return to the Bridgehaven Bridge and cross the Russian River and drive south on Highway 1 to Bodega Bay.

    Fort Ross:
A Russian trading post and fort established in 1812, it has been restored to a museum and visitor's center. It was the largest Russian presence this far south in the United States. This is now a state park and has a per car fee. Allow 1 hour to visit the fort and about 2 hours driving time to get there.

    Bodega Bay:
A fishing village discovered by the Spanish in 1775 and settled by Russian fur hunters in 1809. During certain times of the year it's a great spot to whale watch or go deep-sea fishing. Good seafood restaurants can be found at the Tides Wharf or Lucas Wharf. Numerous state beaches are available to the public en route or at Doren State Park in Bodega Bay. * The Hitchcock film entitled The Birds was filmed in Bodega Bay.

    Napa Valley Adventure:
Your adventure will take you through some beautiful countryside and some of the best grape-growing regions in the world. You will pass into the Alexander Valley grape and wine area and then through scenic Knights Valley to the Napa Valley.

    Calistoga:
As you move along Highway 128, you will be heading for the town Calistoga, which is at the northern end of the Napa Valley. If wineries are not your primary interest, you might try a mud bath or soak in the mineral hot springs that are offered in Calistoga. En route to Napa, stop at the St. Helena Factory Outlet. It has many unique stores. About ¼ mile beyond on the left is the Hurd Candle Factory, where you can watch beeswax candles being made and decorated. * This is also the location of Freemark Abbey Winery.

    Healdsburg Area Family Fun Activities:
    * Parks/Picnics: Giorgi Park with tennis courts and a super playground and Veterans Memorial Beach Park, with swimming, beach, playground and picnic area. * Hiking/Bicycling: Lake Sonoma and Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve, in Guerneville. Map at Healdsburg Chamber office. * Canoeing: Trowbridge canoe trips down the Russian River. Short and long trips available. * Waterworks: Windsor Waterworks waterslides.
